als, wenn, wann
Three ways to say when and how to choose.
The rule

| als | one event in the past | Als ich in Berlin war, besuchte ich das Museum. |
| wenn | repeated past, present or future; also "if" | Wenn ich Zeit habe, lese ich. |
| wann | direct or indirect question | Wann beginnt der Kurs? Ich weiß nicht, wann er beginnt. |
Word order
als and wenn start a subordinate clause: the verb goes to the end.
- Wenn ich müde bin, trinke ich Kaffee.
- Ich trinke Kaffee, wenn ich müde bin.
If the subordinate clause comes first, the main verb follows right after the comma.
Quick test
Can you replace it with "every time"? Then use wenn. Was it one time in the past? Use als.
