B1.08 indem and sodass
Explain how something is done and what the result is.
indem = by doing
- Er spart Geld, indem er selbst kocht.
- Man verbessert seine Aussprache, indem man laut liest.
sodass = so that (result)
- Der Zug hatte Versspätung, sodass ich zu spät kam.
- Sie sprach leise, sodass niemand sie hörte.
Compare with damit
damit = purpose (what you want): Ich lerne, damit ich eine gute Note bekomme. sodass = result (what happened): Ich habe gelernt, sodass ich eine gute Note bekam.
Word order
Both start a subordinate clause: verb at the end.
